Brewing the perfect cup of coffee everyday - French press for the win

If you’re like me what you really want is a consistently good cup of coffee. It's the first thing that passes your lips in the morning, and even though it might be a habit that gets you through the day - as basic as brushing your teeth or checking TikTok - that doesn’t mean you have to put up with something subpar. In fact, it's part of the CoffeeChump ethos that if you’re doing something everyday, that thing should be as good as it can possibly be.

So, how do you make a consistently good cup of Joe day after day? Start with a good coffee that you love - we’re partial to the medium roast goodness of our House Blend. Next get yourself a French press (AKA cafetière, AKA the shiny pot with the plunger) and explore the very simple art of making a great cup of coffee in minutes.

The French press is beloved by us (and coffee drinkers the world over) for its simplicity. It can extract full-bodied flavour from your coffee beans with minimal effort and no machine cleaning. It’s also perfect if you’re on the go, camping, travelling etc. What’s not to love?

Here are our tips for getting the best from your French press:

  1. Start with high-quality beans: The foundation of any great cup of coffee is the quality of the beans. Choose freshly roasted beans from a small batch roastery (*cough* like us *cough cough*).
  2. Grind the beans: A coarse grind is ideal for the French Press because it won’t seep through the filter and make your cup muddy - yuk. We can do this step for you, obviously.
  3. Measure the coffee and water: Use one tablespoon of ground coffee for every 175ml water. This can be tweaked depending on how strong you like (or need) your cup to be.
  4. Bloom the coffee: Before fully immersing the grounds in water, pour a small amount of hot water (about double the weight of the coffee) over them and let them bloom for about 30 seconds. This allows the coffee to release trapped gases and enhances its flavors.
  5. Slowly plunge: After blooming, pour the remaining hot water over the grounds and stir - don’t get too rough with it.
  6. Steep: Leave to steep for three to four minutes - just long enough to make a piece of toast or take the bins out.

That’s all there is to it! A perfect cup of coffee made with a French press. The result is a smooth, flavorful coffee in as long as it takes to say “Give me that crema”.

Happy brewing!
